In most cases, your teacher will select the appropriate grade for you based on your skill level.

In face-to-face exams, you perform your pieces to an examiner in a live setting. Face-to-face exams are available in two sessions each year: the Mid-year Session in May-June (enrolments in February) and the Year-end Session in October-December (enrolments in July). [**Due to the ongoing pandemic, face-to-face exams in Thailand have been suspended until further notice.]

In digital exams, you record your performance and upload it to an online platform, and an examiner will assess your performance remotely. Digital exams are available all year round in monthly sessions (enrolments approximately one month in advance).

The exam pieces are the same for each grade whether you take the face-to-face or digital exam, and there is no difference in terms of difficulty. However, each exam method will have a different skill set that will be assessed, e.g. supporting tests (like sight reading or improvisation) for face-to-face exams, and overall performance skills for digital exams.

The level information is the level of qualification according to the Regulated Qualifications Framework in England and Northern Ireland:

• Entry Level 3 = Initial
• Level 1 = Grades 1-3
• Level 2 = Grades 4-5
• Level 3 = Grades 6-8
• Level 4 = ATCL
• Level 6 = LTCL
• Level 7 = FTCL

You will receive your username and password via email in the middle of the month you have chosen to upload in, usually around the 14th-16th.

Yes. Please use a still camera to record in one long take without pressing pause between pieces. No post-production editing is allowed.

Yes. However, if you prefer to play from a notated photocopy version, the official music books must be visible in the camera frame at all times.

Your results will normally be released within 14 days after you submit your performance. You can log in to view your results on the same online platform you used to submit the video.

An exam may be 'referred' because of a technical issue with the video file, missing or incomplete submission documents, or syllabus infringement. If you have been referred and have not received an email from Trinity College London regarding your referral, please contact the Bangkok office.

Some pieces from the Piano 2018-2020 exam books are included in the Piano 2021-2023 Syllabus. Please check the validity in the current syllabus.

Repeats are to be omitted except when it is stated otherwise in the syllabus or on the official Trinity music. However, instructions such as D.C. al fine or D.S. al Coda must be observed.

You may use a digital piano when recording your performance for a digital exam as long as the keys are weighted and the instrument is of a standard size. If your exam piece requires using the pedal, the instrument must have a working pedal.

Acoustic Guitar and Classical Guitar are different subjects and each has its own set of repertoire and technical requirements. Please see the relevant syllabuses.

Up to and including Grade 5, teachers may assist with tuning. At Grades 6–8, candidates must tune their instruments without assistance. Electronic tuners may be used up to and including Grade 5.

Singing is a classical subject. The repertoire usually includes folk songs, musical numbers and operatic works.

Vocals, or Rock and Pop Vocals, is a Rock and Pop subject, where candidates perform rock and pop songs with a backing track imitating performance in a live band.

For Initial to Grade 6, candidates can use either an electric or an acoustic kit in the exam. From Grade 7 onwards, an acoustic kit must be used. Please note that centres are only required to provide an acoustic kit.

Special Covid-19 arrangements: Drum Kit/Rock & Pop Drums candidates may use an electronic drum kit up to Grade 8. Where instruments are not capable of producing the required voices, effects and dynamics, a list of acceptable adaptations and solutions can be found on the Covid-19 Special Arrangements web pages.

• Initial: Candidates are encouraged to use a microphone, but this is not compulsory for any song.
• Grades 1–3: Candidates must use a microphone for song 3; it is advised but not compulsory for songs 1 and 2.
• Grades 4–5: Candidates must use a microphone for songs 1 and 3. Use of a microphone is advised for song 2, unless this is sung with live piano or guitar accompaniment.
• Grades 6–8: Candidates must use a microphone for songs 1 and 3, and for song 2 unless this is sung with live piano or guitar accompaniment.

At all grades it is optional to use a microphone for session skills (during face-to-face exams).

Special Covid-19 arrangements: Rock & Pop Vocals candidates can perform without a microphone at all grades if necessary. Please be aware of the balance between voice and backing track to ensure the candidate can be heard clearly at all times.
